Words in Red: John 5:16 – He is still working

John 5:16 – My Father is always at His work to this very day, and I too, am working.

Jesus, I am grateful that your work for redemption is finished!  You paid the price, rose from the dead and ascended to your place at the right hand of the Father.  There is nothing to add to your completed work on the cross as Savior and Redeemer of the world.  Those three words, “It is finished”, are the most liberating words ever spoken!

But you said that the Father is always working.  Is that the work of bringing all things in heaven and on earth to its predetermined culmination? Is that the work of calling the those who will receive you and sanctifying us?

Heavenly Father, Daddy God, thank You that You are still working in me! You are still bringing healing to me.  You are still drawing me closer, calling me to You, correcting me and strengthening me. You are still teaching me and maturing me. The Message Bible says it so well in Psalm 119: 32-34

Psalm 119: 32-34 (Message)

32 I’ll run the course you lay out for me
if you’ll just show me how.

33-34 God, teach me lessons for living
so I can stay the course.
Give me insight so I can do what you tell me—
my whole life one long, obedient response.

Lord, I ask You as my bountiful and rich Dad, to please heal any residual pain beneath the scars that life has put on me.  I want to keep the scars as my testimonies of Your faithfulness.  But the pain associated with them only hinders me and keeps me from the full joy and peace that You purchased for me.  Wipe away my insecurities and send me out with boldness and tenacity.  Open doors of favor and enable me to courageously walk through them. Remove all grief and sadness for what isn’t and didn’t turn out as I planned.

Heavenly Dad, I am glad that you’re still working.  Let your works and words through me be a sign to a lost world that You are not only their Creator, but that You are actively involved in their lives.

Psalm 119: 44-48, 50 (Message)

44-48 Oh, I’ll guard with my life what you’ve revealed to me,
guard it now, guard it ever;
And I’ll stride freely through wide open spaces
as I look for your truth and your wisdom;
Then I’ll tell the world what I find,
speak out boldly in public, unembarrassed.
I cherish your commandments—oh, how I love them!—
relishing every fragment of your counsel.

49-50 Remember what you said to me, your servant—
I hang on to these words for dear life!
These words hold me up in bad times;
yes, your promises rejuvenate me.

 Now you:

Do you see how God is working in you? If you don’t think you can, then ask yourself these questions:

  • Are you the same person today that you were one year ago? What about one decade ago?
  • Has God brought people or opportunities across your path to teach you more of Him, to challenge your faith to deeper maturity, or to fuel a hunger in you for more of His presence and His word?
  • Is there something inside of you that knows that there is more to this life than you are experiencing?

Those are all signs that God is at work in your heart.  Don’t turn away from Him.  I am telling you the truth, everything you need and desire is found in Him.  All other things in this life are bonus features, like the extras at the end of a DVD.  But he is the main show, if you will.  Learning about Him is cool.  But knowing Him and doing life with Him is everything.
